Insurable Earnings

Insurable earnings are the portion of an employee's pay on which Employment Insurance premiums are calculated, up to the annual maximum insurable earnings (MIE) of $68,900 for 2026. They set both the employee's EI deduction, at the 1.63% premium rate, and the employer's larger matching premium of 1.4 times that rate. Insurable earnings are also reported on the Record of Employment and used by Service Canada to calculate EI benefit entitlement after a job loss. Our 2026 CPP and EI maximums guide sets out the exact dollar caps for the year.
