Unearned revenue

Unearned revenue is payment received before the goods or services it relates to have been delivered. It is another name for deferred revenue and sits as a liability until the obligation is met. The distinction matters at year end, when treating customer deposits as earned income overstates profit and creates tax on revenue the business has not yet earned.
