Retained earnings
Retained earnings are the cumulative profits a company has kept rather than paid out to shareholders. The balance is equity, not cash: a company can show large retained earnings and still have an empty bank account if the profits were reinvested. For owner-managed corporations the balance also shapes how much can be paid out as dividends and when, which is why it sits at the centre of the salary-versus-dividend decision.
