Prepaid expense

A prepaid expense is a cost paid in advance of the period it covers, carried as an asset until it is used up. Insurance premiums, annual software licences and rent paid ahead are the usual examples. Recording the whole payment as an expense when it leaves the bank distorts the month it was paid and flatters the months that follow, which matters most when the amounts are large relative to monthly profit.
