Operating expense
An operating expense is a cost of running the business day to day, as opposed to buying a long-lived asset. Operating expenses are deducted in full in the period incurred, while capital purchases are added to an asset class and written off over time. The line between the two decides whether a cost reduces this year's tax bill or the next decade's, which is why repairs versus improvements is such a frequently disputed distinction.
