GST

The Goods and Services Tax is the federal value-added tax that applies to most things sold in Canada. A registered business charges it on sales, claims back the GST it paid on its own purchases, and remits only the difference to the CRA. Because the tax flows through to the final buyer, registered businesses generally do not carry it as a cost. Our guide to GST, HST and PST sorts out how the federal and provincial layers fit together.
