Chart of accounts
A chart of accounts is the structured list of every account a business uses to record its transactions. It determines what the financial statements can tell you: accounts that are too coarse hide the costs worth managing, and accounts that are too fine bury the signal in detail. Setting it up around the decisions the owner actually makes, rather than copying a generic template, is what turns bookkeeping into information.
