Bad debt expense

Bad debt expense is the cost recognised when a receivable is judged uncollectible. Under accrual accounting the expense is estimated and recorded in the period the revenue was earned, not the period the customer finally stops paying. For tax purposes a debt generally has to be genuinely uncollectible before it can be deducted, so the accounting estimate and the tax deduction usually differ in timing.
